Condizione: FAIR. First edition. A rather hard-to-find novel by this rather prolific author, one which gives a behind the scenes look at the "little world" of a modern department store. The NY Times review in 1935 commented "In a loose, swift, breathless style, James pictures the intricate and far-flung functioning of a big shop, located in a mythical Union City not unlike New York. The personal side of the story has two angles. There is the success theme and Then there is the shop-girl's point of view. Jeanne Farrell and Mary Morrow, whose families years later have lost their fortunes, come to work in the big Buntling store. One of them meets John Buntling Jr., heir to the Buntling millions, and falls in love with him. . .
