Psychoanalysis can explain the anthropological roots of human society, religion and morality. He compares the psychological conflicts of primitive people to the minds of patients with neuroses. He compares taboos (forbidden practices still with us today) and totems (such as primal animal symbols representing the father). Primal children fear and may kill their father, but share guilt or remorse, and replace the bond with the fatherâs animal totem. Australian Aborigines are frequently mentioned an example of a primitive society. (Modern anthropologists reject Freud's story of the primal childhood murder.
