The materials of Tradition and Poetic Structure fall into three groupings. First is a collection of essays varying from a basic statement upon poetry and tradition, through commanding essays on Statius, Chaucer, the Renaissance, to Wallace Stevens. The second part is a reprinting, entire, of Cunningham's Woe or Wonder: The Emotional Effect of Shakespearean Tragedy. Third is an appendix section of two brief and brilliant essays upon history and poetry and upon tragedy as essence.
