Schon 1807 hatten die Briten Helgoland eingenommen, um von hier den Kampf gegen Napoleon zu organisieren. Durch den sogenannten Helgoland-Sansibar-Vertrag ging die Insel an Preußen und verwandelte sich zur Seefestung. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde Helgoland umkämpfter Schauplatz in beiden Weltkriegen und erlebte 1947 durch die Briten die größte nicht atomare Sprengung der Geschichte. Das Buch zeigt Helgoland jenseits der Nationen, jenseits der Völker als einen Ort der historischen Vielfalt und als Mahnmal für einen dauerhaften europäischen Frieden. 528 pp. Deutsch.
