Jane Margaret Winnard Hooper was the author of several other children's books, including Arbell : A Tale for Young People (1853) and Fanny and Arthur, or, Persevere and Prosper (1862). Oblong quarto. [4], 96 pp. Twenty-six mounted sepia illustrations. Original blue-gray paper boards with calf spine and tips. Title in gilt on front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Binding extremities rubbed, chipped at head of spine, dampstaining to boards. A decent copy of a very scarce title. First edition of one of the scarcest Leadenhall Press books: OCLC lists only three copies. The illustrations are remarkable, reminiscent of the Neo-classicism of Flaxman, yet very much of the fantasy genre.
