Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. The plea was advertised in the British Medical Journal in February 1929: seeking ""strong energetic Medical Women with post-graduate experience in Midwifery"" for ""country work"" in western Canada. A young Dr Mary Percy was intrigued. After graduating with degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Birmingham in 1927, she had been searching for the kind of opportunity which would offer both adventure and practical experience. She answered the advertisement and set off for the Peace River region of Northern Alberta in June of 1929. Little did she know that her ""adventure"" in the Canadian north was to last more than seventy years.Suitable for the Wilds is a collection of Dr Mary Percy Jackson's letters written to family and friends in the early years of her practice, from 1929-1931. The letters offer a fascinating glimpse at life in northern Alberta at the beginning of the Depression, when the area was being farmed and settled by new European immigrants. These homesteaders, along with the area's Aboriginal and Metis population, were Dr Percy's patients, scattered throughout a territory covering nearly 400 square miles. Vigilant about vaccination, nutrition, and preventive medicine, she quickly proved to be a talented physician who was truly ahead of her time, particularly in the area of tuberculosis treatment and prevention.Dr Percy's dedication, good nature, and unfailing sense of humour shine through in her letters. This delightful and captivating collection is a tribute to her indomitable spirit.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good +. B/W Photographs (illustratore). First Edition. SUBTITLED : ` A Norwegian Immigrant's Alberta Memoir '. The author of this 175 page volume - includes INDEX - is a rather prolific writer. This work was originally self-published (1960) as `The Nose Hills Country' . It speaks of her family's migration to Canada in 1910; and their settling in the area of Castor, Alberta where they lived in a `soddy'. She speaks of her personal relationships with the farm animals, the storms, the threat of fire, the building of Avonlea School, and her own experiment with higher education - until marriage got in the way. B/W photographs assist text. Read about : Veteran, Johana Hemnes, waterglass for eggs, nonce art, hoarfrost, and horse traders. Cond : Paper wrapper is light green and brown. Front cover features a cameo of the author as a young woman set against an archive image of the Big Gap Stampede. Volume is bright, tight, square and clean. It's downfall is that a teacher has gone through it with a pen to mark several passages for their instructional value. Marginalia ! ! Store sticker verso front cover. Excellent prairie reference with a 33 page introduction including references.Quote (p. 64) : " We called and called, but got no answer and no cow could we find. Finally we decided to cross the creek and take a look at the bunch over there. We found a place where the water was quite shallow and enough rocks had been rolled into ._._._. ." Size: 8vo.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Great Dames is a collection of biographical sketches, memoirs, and essays about twentieth-century Canadian women from all walks of life. While attempting to capture the meaning of the ordinary lives of extraordinary women, it also explores the possibility of challenging, even subverting, the traditional view of life writing as an endeavour to summarize and fix in time, the public careers of public men. The fifteen essays represent a variety of alternative approaches to feminist biography, including chronological narrative, thematic exploration, multiple biography, conversations between biographer and subject, interviews, diaries, and even fictional accounts. In selecting their subjects, from Mennonite refugee women to an Ojibwa ethnologist, the contributors were asked to consider women who would be unlikely candidates for longer biographies; in the course of their research, however, it became clear that the lives of at least two of the chosen subjects warranted book-length examination. The selection also attempts to address perceived gaps in regional, class, racial, and disciplinary representation in life writing. Together, the essays reveal that the content, form, and perspective of biography are now bound only by the creativity, research energy, and taste of the biographer.
