Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. This vintage book is "Agnes Smedley : The Life and times of an American Radical" by Janice R. & Stephen R. Mackinnon. It is the 1988 First Edition, published by Virago Press., and is now out of print in this edition. The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket write-up : "From her impoverished childhood in Colorado coal-mining camps to her final years as a victim of McCarthyism , Agnes Smedley's life (1892 - 1950) was one of intense and often dramatic political commitment, as well as personal disappointment. Country school teacher, birth control pioneer, socialist journalist, author, novelist, feminist, freedom fighter, and associate of the early Freudians, she participated in some of the most important social and political revolutions of the Twentieth Century. Her friends, associates, and lovers reflect the diversity of her activism: Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, Ladjit Rai, Nehru, Chou En-lai, Edgar Snow, and Käthy Kollwitz figured prominently. "After her early involvement with India's struggle for independence, she visited China in 1928 as a special correspondent for 'Die Frankfurter Zeitung', and subsequently for the 'Manchester Guardian'; she later returned to join the Fourth Army, enduring incredible emotional and physical hardships. Following Mao Tse Tung's victory in 1949, she was determined to return, but she died in England in 1950 whilst awaiting her visa, alone and under suspicion as a spy. This meticulously researched study draws on a wealth of contemporary documents, letters, FBI files, and extensive interviews worldwide to provide a compelling and highly readable portrait of one of the Twentieth Century's most courageous radicals."
