No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Published by Jochem Hasebroek, Amsterdam, [c. 1722] Large engraved celestial chart with a rotating printed paper ring (volvelle or rete) on an off-centre axis to indicate the part of the sky visible at any date and time and to make a variety of celestial calculations, all for the Netherlands' latitude of 52 degrees.  With letterpress instructions by Calman on a separate printed slip at the right. The sky image 32.5 cm in diameter; the whole chart with the letterpress slip as mounted 56 x 66.5 cm. A string serves as a pointer for aligning the scales in the stationary and rotating parts. Coloured by a contemporary hand. The chart is here in its third state, but we have located no complete example of any earlier version. The Boerhaave Museum in Leiden has the chart without volvelle or instructional text, published by Doncker, but the 1664 edition described in Doncker's advertisement clearly included the volvelle and instructional text. Perhaps the surviving chart is the 1684 version mentioned but not seen by Bierens de Haan, who provides neither a detailed description nor a source for his information. They and the present version (printed from Doncker's plate c. 1722) seem to have appeared only as separate publications, hence their great rarity. The circular border around the sky image and the outer part of the volvelle include scales with several kinds of data so that the chart can be used for various purposes. one can use the string to align the time in the volvelle with the date in the border of the chart, so that the part of the sky visible at that moment appears inside the volvelle. The chart with its volvelle, scales and string can also be used to calculate times for the rising and setting of constellations at various dates (or to calculate the present time based on the position of the stars). Fifty-three constellations are numbered quarter by quarter (15, 9, 14 and 15), with a Dutch key identifying them in each corner. Calman's instructional text, printed letterpress on a separate slip (495 by 185 cm) and mounted to the right of the chart itself, describes the different scales, etc., then presents nine "proposals" (giving examples of the use of the chart). In the plate of the star chart itself is engraved, "Auct. J. Stampioen. 't Amsterdam by Iochem Hasebroek" but Hasebroek's name is larger and in a different style than the rest of the lettering, and one can see traces of an earlier name under it. Although the older name cannot be deciphered, one can see that "Hendrick Doncker" would fit (with traces of the h and Do, and marks where the ascenders to the d, k and k would have been), making it clear that the present chart is printed from Doncker's original plate. Calman advertised his Amsterdam boarding school for calligraphy, mathematics, etc. in 1722, and Hasebroek (1682- 1756) is recorded as a sea chart publisher and instrument maker from 1714 to 1743. Bierens de Haan 4516 (1684 ed., not seen: see his Bouwstoffen II, pp. 386 & 429 note 5); E.O. van Keulen et al., "In de Gekroonde Lootsman," item 4 & illustration between pp. 64 & 65 (1680/1696 Vooght/Van Keulen ed.); not in BMC Printed Maps; Zinner, Astron. Single sheet (21 x 24 6/8 inches, full margins showing the plate mark). AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ENGRAVED MAP OF FLANDERS decorated with a large elaborate allegorical cartouche surrounding the coat of arms bottom left, HAND-COLOURED BY THE MASTER COLOURIST, THE CELEBRATED DIRK JANSZ. VAN SANTEN, coloured in outline with cartouches, decorative borders, embellishments, and landmarks fully colored, in rich and exotic colour combinations, with added elements to clothing and to masonry, HEIGHTENED IN GUM ARABIC AND GOLD, (central vertical crease, with original mounting guard on verso). A magnificent map including the important, influential and beautiful city of Bruges, in 1680 part of the Spanish Netherlands, now in Belgium. Van Santen applied transparent and opaque colours at the same time in both mixed and pure tints. He often painted the whole surface of the map or illustration, transforming the graphic light and dark contrasts into colour. To dark areas representing shadows, clothing pleats or the 'repoussoir', the foreground of a landscape, he applied his characteristic shiny varnish; this had the effect of brightening the colour. He devoted a great deal of attention to skies and horizons, frequently making use of the same colour progression." (Goedings). Atlases and books coloured by van Santen are found in the libraries of the most prominent collectors of the golden age of Dutch cartography ".Bibles and atlases, bound in deluxe bindings by Albert Magnus (1642-1689) and decorated by van Santen were considered gifts worthy of princes. Travellers and poets wrote about this work" (Goedings). This map is from one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers, who were among the leading producers of maps in Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, founded by Nicholas Visscher, whose work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. Colouring authenticated by Truusje Goedings, author of "Dirk Jansz. Van Santen.a survey" 1992.

A magnificent map of the Westerschelde estuary to the west of Antwerp, showing Ghent to the south. The river Scheldt and particularly its estuary has been of considerable commercial and strategic importance throughout history. On its banks the city of Antwerp (not shown on this map) reached its zenith as the centre of European trade in the mid 16th-century, but after the armies of Philip II of Spain invaded Flanders in 1568, and eventually blockaded the Scheldt, Amsterdam became heir to the wealth of Antwerp. In World War II the estuary once again became a contested area. Despite allied control of Antwerp, in September 1944 German forces still occupied fortified positions throughout the Scheldt estuary west and north, preventing any allied shipping to the port. In the Battle of the Scheldt, the Canadian First Army successfully cleared the area, allowing supply convoys direct access to the port of Antwerp by November 1944. VAN SANTEN, coloured in outline with cartouches, decorative borders, embellishments, and landmarks fully colored, in rich and exotic colour combinations, with added elements to clothing, marbling to masonry, HEIGHTENED IN GUM ARABIC AND GOLD (central vertical crease, with original mounting guard on verso). This magnificent map is from one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers, who were among the leading producers of maps in Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, founded by Nicholas Visscher, whose work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. Colouring authenticated by Truusje Goedings, author of "Dirk Jansz. Van Santen.a survey" 1992. Amsterdam, Erfgen. van de Wed. Corn. Stichter, 1754, 8x5.5 cm, bound in dark shagreen (ray skin, in Dutch: "segrijn" or "roggehuid"), four silver clasps remain (decorated with the coat of arms of Holland), with silver pen, marbled paper flyleaves, gilded edges, no page numbers, good condition, printed in red and black ink, lots of celestial and animal symbols, printer's mark on title page. Scarce. l In the middle of the book there are several blank pages (of two kinds of paper), intended to make notes. More than one owner has left his or her mark by making use of these pages. Most entries are in Dutch, but there are also entries in French by Agathe (1817). Some entries seem to be made by a child as it concerns the date of his daddy's birthday and a visit from the school teacher. The entries date from 1817 to 1839. An endearing example in Dutch (1817, Den Haag): "Schoon ik uw dierbaar bijzijn mis (Although I miss your presence) Toch zweeft ge atloos in mijn gedachten (Still you're always in my thoughts) Uw hart betoovrend beeltenis" (Your enchanting image).
