Zijn inmiddels al eeuwen durende roem dankt hij voor een belangrijk deel aan het feit dat de taal waarin hij dichtte en die tot spreektaal op het platteland vervallen was, niet alleen nog steeds bestaat, maar sinds zijn tijd ook onafgebroken het symbool bij uitstek van de eigenheid van het gewest is geweest. Zo is de betekenis van Gysbert Japix nauw verbonden met de geschiedenis van Friesland. Zijn dichterschap betekent dus veel voor het nationale zelfgevoel van de Friezen. Er mogen inmiddels andere dichters en schrijvers zijn gekomen, die ook hun symboolwaarde hebben en die bovendien meer tot de harten van nu spreken, zoals de gebroeders Halbertsma met hun Rimen en Teltsjes, maar Gysberts glans verbleekt toch niet. Het geheim van zijn succes zit hem dan ook voor een deel in het licht idealiserende dat zijn waardering zo zeer kenmerkt.
