Madot (illustratore). 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. POE, Edgar Allan. The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe. With Original Memoir. London: Sampson Low, Son & Co., 1858. First British edition. Large 8vo (230 x 160mm), pp. [xxx], 247. Illustrated throughout with steel-engraved plates, vignettes, and decorative initials by F. R. Pickersgill R.A., John Tenniel, Birket Foster, Felix Darley, Jasper Cropsey, P. Duggan, Percival Skelton, and A. M. Madot, engraved under the superintendence of Joseph Cundall. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth, ruled in gilt to boards and spine, with the University of New South Wales gilt medallion blocked to the front board, a prize binding, presented as an academic award. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt, raised bands. Condition is Very Good. Binding square and secure, gilt bright, cloth with light age-toning to boards and minor rubbing at extremities. Internally clean throughout; pages bright and fresh with the light foxing to a small number of leaves consistent with a book of this age. No ownership marks other than the prize inscription. The front free endpaper carries a formal Latin prize inscription recording the award of this book to "Gulielmo Henrico Mate" (William Henry Mate), a student of the University of Sydney, commended for excellence in Mathematics and placed first class at the Public Examinations, in the year MDCCCLXIII (1863). Signed by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Registrar of the University. The 1858 Sampson Low edition is the first British illustrated edition of Poe's collected poetry, appearing the same year as the first American illustrated edition (J.S. Redfield, New York). The illustrated editions of 1858 represent a landmark in Poe's reception, the first serious attempt to render his poetry visually, with contributions from some of the leading Victorian illustrators of the day, including John Tenniel, then best known for his Punch work and illustrating Carroll's Alice. Copies in presentable condition are genuinely scarce.
