A Very Good copy. A collection of poems ("kisses") by Johannes Secundus (1510-1536), a Dutch poet, and Jean Bonnefons (1554-c. 1614), a French poet. The poems of both authors center upon the themes of the kiss and love. Included at the front are two brief biographical sketches about Secundus and Bonnefons. A selection of other romantic poems by ancient and modern authors are in the back.

Bonnefons's work particularly is noted for its playful and witty renderings of love and seduction, which he employs to crea…te both erotic and romantic verse. His themes of pursuing love and expressing amorous desire were part of a shift in humanist thought concerning the nature of love, marriage and sexual experience. In his poetry, the author seeks to place these reflections and experiences against the backdrop of an idealised classical world, using Latin as if it were a living, spoken language. Originally published in 1587, the book gained popularity for providing a fresh perspective on amorous poetry, and combined with Jules Durant's vernacular responses to Bonnefons's Latin, it spoke to an audience tired of staid literary conventions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
