Si Jean Jacquelin est reconnu pour avoir été le concepteur des jaquettes de nombre d'éditions aux Presses de la Cité, c'est aussi et surtout un affichiste renommé. Directeur artistique de l'agence Step à partir de 1929, il réalise plusieurs affiches de cinéma à partir de 1940 tout en poursuivant ses activités de dessinateur publicitaire pour de nombreux secteurs : automobile (Peugeot, Delage, Simca, Buick, Fiat), énergétique (Antar, Esso, Shell), presse écrite et édition (Paris-Soir, L'Intransigeant, Éditions Froissart, Presses de la Cité), mode (Scandale, Magasin Le Printemps), marques et événements (Crédit Foncier, 24 heures du Mans, Coop, Vittel, Casino d'Enghein, Brandt, Champagne Mercier, Semaine du cinéma, Les Châteaux de la Loire) et pour le secteur du tourisme et du voyage (Air France, Aéropostale, Compagnie Transatlantique). Une grande exposition lui a été consacrée en 1993 à la Bibliothèque Forney, doublée d'un catalogue richement illustré (Jean Jacquelin affichiste et dessinateur publicitaire ; Exposition Bibliothèque Forney du 29 avril au 28 mai 1993). Esso est une marque associée à la compagnie pétrolière américaine ExxonMobil : en 1911, le démantèlement de la Standard Oil fondée par John D. Rockefeller conduit à la formation de 34 sociétés indépendantes (Mobil, Chevron.) dont certaines gardent le droit d'utiliser la marque Standard Oil, qui prend progressivement le nom d'Esso (contraction phonétique de SO et acronyme du nom historique de la Eastern States Standard Oil). L'ovale Esso devient l'emblème du groupe en 1939, et le réseau se densifie en France après-guerre ; en 1972, la marque reprend le nom de Exxon aux États-Unis - mais conservera celui d'Esso pour le reste du monde.
