En octobre 1859, on retrouve dans une ferme, à Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d'Or près de Lyon, les corps des 3 occupantes, les dames Gayet, la grand-mère, la mère et la petite fille. El…les ont été massacrées à coup de pierre, de couteau et de hache. D'emblée l'enquête des gendarmes s'intéresse à un voisin, un certain Joanon, qui avait travaillé comme ouvrier agricole dans leur ferme et nourrissait à leur égard du ressentiment. - - - - - "L'exposition publique des cadavres dans les morgues, comme les exécutions capitales sont alors un spectacle populaire qui fascine comme on le voit lors de l'exécution des assassins des dames Gayet à Saint-Cyr-au-Mont d'Or, près de Lyon, en 1859 : Dans la nuit qui précéda l'exécution, une foule considérable se transporta de Lyon à Saint-Cyr. Les ouvriers de la Croix-Rousse y vinrent en rangs serrés. Depuis minuit, la foule s'entassa le long du coteau et dans les creux des chemins. Il n'y avait pas un espace vide sur l'herbe, ni dans la poussière des routes. Par moment, des feux de bengale jetaient des lueurs rouges ou bleues sur ces masses qui se culbutaient et parfois se poursuivaient jusque devant l'échafaud qui avait été dressé la veille. (.) On s'arracha la place aux fenêtres des maisons qui furent l'objet d'une scandaleuse spéculation, même celles des soeurs de Saint-Joseph. À 5 heures du matin, la troupe et la gendarmerie arrivent et préparent l'enceinte réservée. Le contemporain anonyme dont nous rapportons le récit continue ainsi : « C'était le plus curieux spectacle la foule entassée, empilée à droite de l'échafaud, ondulait constamment de haut en bas et, à chaque instant, il semblait que ces vagues humaines allaient se briser sur les baïonnettes des fantassins. Les champs étaient ravagés et piétinés, les récoltes pillées. Les arbres étaient habités jusqu'aux plus hautes branches, une branche de noyer où se trouvaient au moins dix personnes se rompit, néanmoins sans accident sérieux. » À 6 heures, le cortège apparut précédé par un peloton de dragons. La voiture cellulaire s'avança escortée de gendarmes entre deux haies de militaires. Trois prêtres accompagnaient les criminels. Successivement, Joannon, puis Chrétien et Deschamps subirent leur châtiment. Il y eut à Saint-Cyr, ce matin-là, une foule immense, peut-être cent mille personnes, comme un vieux contemporain nous l'a affirmé, en tout cas sûrement trente mille à quarante mille" (référence : Docteur Gabourd, Saint-Cyr et les Monts d'Or, Lyon, Éditions Égé, 1977).
