Titre d'une parfaite justesse pour évoquer celui qui, avec René Cassin, fut l'une des plus prestigieuses _ et des plus efficaces _ personnalités de la France libre. Georges Catroux, né en 1877 (date symbolique, où la République, jusque-là hésitante, passe enfin aux républicains), descend d'une famille modeste des bleus d'Anjou , de cette région du Saumurois obstinément fidèle aux idées de 1789 contre les Vendéens. A sa sortie de Saint-Cyr, il choisit de servir outre-mer, au Tonkin d'abord, puis en Afrique du Nord, où Lyautey lui donne l'exemple d'une politique libérale qui accompagne la force des armes par une diplomatie intelligente. Chef de bataillon en 1914, très grièvement blessé devant Arras, fait prisonnier, Catroux est interné par les Allemands à la forteresse d'Ingolstadt où il se trouve avec un certain capitaine de Gaulle. En 1920, la confiance de Clemenceau l'envoie au Proche-Orient où il s'initie aux arcanes de la politique syrienne et libanaise que compliquent encore les intrigues anglaises : Londres n'a pas admis sans réticences la présence des Français sur cette route des Indes, chasse gardée de l'impérialisme britannique. Aussi le colonel Catroux, malgré le charme de Damas, où il s'est fait par son libéralisme de précieuses amitiés, a-t-il hâte de revenir vers le Maghreb, et en 1934 il a la gloire de terminer l'unification du Maroc, autour du sultan, par la pacification de Marrakech. En novembre 1935, le général Catroux commande en France les troupes de Haute-Alsace. Devant l'occupation de la Rhénanie par Hitler, et sans attendre les ordres d'un gouvernement pusillanime, le 7 mars 1936, il prépare ses forces à l'offensive qui eût alors écrasé le nazisme dans l'oeuf. Démarche audacieuse, blâmée à Paris et qui contribua à faire mettre à la retraite ce chef trop clairvoyant. L'homme des missions désespérées Arrive 1939. Georges Mandel, indomptable ministre des colonies, rappelle Catroux au service et le nomme gouverneur de l'Indochine. Parfaitement conscient que la défense de cette terre lointaine est inséparable de l'alliance anglaise, Catroux refuse l'armistice de 1940, rompt avec le défaitisme de Vichy et rejoint de Gaulle : il donne alors un exemple, destiné malheureusement à rester unique, de dérogation à la routine de l'armée française. Scandale de voir un général d'armée se placer sous les ordres d'un général de brigade à titre temporaire ! Catroux, d'emblée, a compris que de Gaulle, par l'appel du 18 juin, n'est plus seulement un militaire, mais incarne le gouvernement de la France réelle. Les relations de Gaulle-Catroux seront souvent orageuses d'ailleurs : les deux hommes diffèrent de tempérament ; aussi fermes sur les principes certes, le premier est l'homme des décisions hardies, au risque de tout casser, le second compte davantage sur la négociation patiente. Et, en maintes occasions, la séduction habile de Catroux amortira efficacement les rugosités gaulliennes. Par exemple en 1941 (et surtout en novembre 1943) au Liban et en Syrie. Par exemple, encore, en 1942-1943, dans le rapprochement nécessaire entre de Gaulle et le pauvre général Giraud, aussi borné en politique que vaillant soldat. Par exemple, enfin, dans l'insoluble problème des réformes en Afrique du Nord, où Catroux professait des idées sociales de vingt ans en avance sur son temps. ************** ref XV-XXV ref GR1-D28.

Le volume I contient une introduction divisée en six chapitres consacrés à la biographie de Copernic, à ses travaux astronomiques mineurs, à la préparation et à la présentation d ensemble du De revolutionibus, à la réception de l héliocentrisme de 1540 à 1616, à la question des précurseurs, et à l histoire du texte. Ces chapitres sont suivis d une série de dix-sept annexes sur des thèmes particuliers. Un index des noms (anciens et modernes), ainsi qu un index géographique, terminent ce premier volume. Le volume II contient l édition critique du De revolutionibus fondée sur le texte de l édition princeps, corrigé à l aide du manuscrit autographe de Copernic qui, fait exceptionnel, a été conservé. Elle est suivie de l édition des passages les plus importants du manuscrit non retenus dans l édition de 1543. Tous ces textes sont accompagnés d une traduction française en vis-à-vis. Un index des noms de personnes et des noms géographiques cités par Copernic, ainsi qu un lexique de la langue technique de Copernic, complètent ce volume. Le volume III contient un sommaire analytique du De revolutionibus, les notes relatives à chacun des six livres, une série de dix-sept notes complémentaires. Cet ensemble de notes est suivi d un appendice consacré à la condamnation de l héliocentrisme en 1616 et à la censure du De revolutionibus, et d un dossier iconographique. Ce volume est complété par quatre index : index des noms anciens et modernes, index géographique et Index rerum notabilium. "" ******************************.
