Peter Ruffles ? Hertford Born and Bred is very much in the second category, and all the better for it. Written by Jean Purkis and published in 2007 by Hertford Oral History , this is the sort of book that reminds you how much history lives not in empires and treaties but in memory, accent, work, weather, buildings, habits, and the small practical details of everyday life that official history usually strides past on its way to something supposedly more important. The title alone is wonderfully rooted: born and bred is not the language of branding consultants or arts-funding strategy documents. It is the language of belonging, of someone who did not merely pass through a town but was formed by it, and perhaps knew the back ways, the local characters, and which buildings used to be something else before they became estate agents. Books like this are often underestimated, which is a mistake. Local oral history can look modest on the shelf, but it tends to contain precisely the material that vanishes first when nobody bothers to write it down. The rhythms of speech, the recollection of streets and shops, the particular cast of a place before ?development? improved it into recognisability for nobody ? all of that lives here in a form far more valuable than another glossy coffee-table volume about kings, battles, or abstract heritage. This is the granular stuff. The human stuff. The sort of thing future historians will be desperate for once everyone has uploaded their lunch but failed to describe their town. There is also something deeply charming about the idea of Hertford Oral History publishing this volume. It suggests seriousness of purpose without any need for pretension: a community preserving its own voices because they matter. No cinematic trailer voiceover required. No promise that this is ?the untold story that changes everything.? It is enough that Peter Ruffles was from Hertford, knew Hertford, and had something worth preserving about Hertford. Frankly, that may tell us more about England than a dozen heavily footnoted books on national identity. And then there is the faintly glorious possibility that this book contains exactly the kind of detail that outsiders would miss and locals would instantly recognise: names, corners, routines, institutions, old assumptions, ways of doing things, the sort of memory-map by which one generation quietly hands a place to the next. That is the beauty of oral history. It catches not just facts but atmosphere. Not just what happened, but how it felt to live there while it was happening. This copy is in As New condition, which is almost suspiciously neat for a book about lived experience and memory. It sits there looking fresh, orderly and entirely unruffled, as if local history should always arrive in pristine form rather than smelling faintly of old paper, parish halls and a retired person?s sideboard. Still, there is something rather pleasing about finding such a carefully kept copy. It suggests respect ? and this is exactly the sort of book that deserves it. Sold by Crappy Old Books , whose title continues to be gloriously misleading, this is a quietly significant little volume for anyone interested in Hertford, local memory, English town life, or the noble and undervalued business of recording ordinary lives before they become irretrievable. A book about one man and one place, certainly ? but also about the stubborn importance of remembering where people actually came from, rather than where later brochures claimed they did.
