Stas, a Belgian chemist, played a crucial role in refining atomic weight measurements with unprecedented precision, thereby challenging some of the fundamental assumptions of the time. The first French printing of Stas' seminal paper, in which he conclusively demonstrates the incommensurability of atomic weights, proving that they are not whole numbers or simple fractions such as halves or quarters of the atomic weight of hydrogen. "Stas established that the atomic weights he determined were neither exact multiples of unity, as previously assumed, nor halves, as Marignac suggested, nor quarters, as Dumas proposed. This finding led Marignac to question the universality of the law of definite proportions. In a series of three papers titled Nouvelles recherches sur les lois des proportions chimiques, sur les poids atomiques et leurs rapports mutuels (1865), Stas presented the results of an extensive set of experiments designed to reaffirm his conclusions. Through meticulous and highly precise measurements, he demonstrated that atomic weights are inherently incommensurable, refuting the notion that deviations from whole numbers were merely due to experimental errors. As a result, Prout's hypothesis was definitively discredited." (DSB).
