Journal issue in honor of Geoffrey Jefferson on the occasion of his 60th birthday on April 10, 1946. The issue includes tributes to Jefferson from Wilder Penfield, R. A. Bailey, G. F. R. (= G. F. Rowbotham), James Hardman. W. R. Henderson). F. K. Kessel was the author of "Cranial Surgery in Salerno", which is on pp. 90-97 of this issue. It concerns the "Bamberg Surgery" from the 12th century. About Frank K. Kessel: "Among the many Jewish medical refugees in the United Kingdom, two were to work closely with Jefferson. One of them, Eugen Pollak, the distinguished neuropathologist who had been recommended by Cairns, had been interned in the Isle of Man as an alien on the outbreak of war. He had now been released and was able to work in the pathology department. . . . He died shortly after the end of the war. Later, a neurosurgeon named F. K. Kessel came to Manchester and became an important member of the neurosurgical department. . . . It was in December of that year, 1941, that F. K. Kessel came to work for Jefferson. He was about 40 years old, and a fully trained neurosurgeon. As such he was able to provide much needed help with some of the operating, especially during the many days when Jeff was away from Manchester. In addition, Kessel saw some of the private patients when requested. He remained in Manchester until about 1948, when he went to live and work in Switzerland" (Peter H. Symon et al [10], in a recent review, state that they consider an adenoma giant only when it has a suprasellar extension of more than 40 mm or is within 6 mm of the foramen of Monro. In this communication we describe the clinicopathologic findings in a case of giant pituitary adenoma, which were comparable to those in cases reported earlier." "Giant pituitary adenomas are uncommon tumors. Jefferson, in 1940, was the first to report a series of large tumors, and described them as massive adenomas.
