(Walter Ristow) First edition, most maps are dated 1775, and some dated 1774. A very important atlas with large maps of 11 of the 13 colonies and of French Canada, of the Revolutionary War era. Jefferys was geographer to the Prince of Wales, later King George III, and the leading map supplier of his day. His "American Atlas" is the most important 18th-century atlas for America, described by Walter Ristow as a "geographical description of the whole continent of America, as portrayed in the best available maps in the latter half of the eighteenth century. as a major cartographic reference work it was, very likely, consulted by American, English, and French civilian administrators and military officers during the Revolution." The atlas contains a number of important maps, including Braddock Mead's "A Map of the Most Inhabited Parts of New England," the largest and most detailed map of New England yet published, and Samuel Holland's "The Provinces of New York and New Jersey." Holland was surveyor for the northern American colonies. Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson's "A Map of the Most Inhabited part of Virginia" is the best colonial map of the Chesapeake region. Lieut. Ross's "Course of the Mississipi" is the first map of that river based on English sources. THE FIRST EDITION IS VERY RARE: with just two copies (including the present when it was sold at Christie's New York in 1983) appearing in American Book Prices Current in the last thirty years. First edition of a noted mid-18th century English work on Spanish America, illustrated with important 32 maps of the region, including the often lacking 'Isthmus of Panama'. This work was published just following the end of the French and Indian War when England's attention was especially turned towards Spain's colonies in America. The work contains a long Introduction, and special accounts of each of the Colonies, Districts, and important cities. Among the most interesting of the contents are the accounts of Florida, Pensacola, and St. Augustine de la Florida. The charts are based on drawings captured from the Spaniards in the recently-ended war, concentrating on ports and seaboards likely to be of the greatest interest to opportunistic British merchants. This seemingly slight work, published the year before commencement of the French and Indian War, in fact lays the ground for British claims to disputed territory in North America. On pages 51-52 Jefferys points out the French cartographers's 'geographical slight of hand': Delisle, Danville, Bellin, and others for extending French boundaries in America with the successive editions of their maps, and so revealing French aims of expansion in all of North America, not only Nova Scotia (called "Arcadia"), but also Carolina, and beyond, even Francis Drake Bay had been renamed San Francisco. Jefferys published his own map of Nova Scotia in the midst of the French and Indian War in 1755. Engraved map, uncoloured, with compass rose, scale of one mile, latitude and longitude borders. An earliest dedicated chart of Bequia, surveyed in the year the Grenadines passed into British possession, and one of the most detailed eighteenth century printed maps of the island. This finely engraved map was surveyed in 1763, the year of the Treaty of Paris, when Saint Vincent and the Grenadines entered British control after a long period of French and British competition in the Lesser Antilles. Britannica notes that Britain was granted control of Saint Vincent in 1763, with the Grenadines later administered in relation to Saint Vincent; the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority records that French settlement on Bequia preceded British possession and included indigo, lime, cotton and sugar production. The map is especially rich in coastal detail naming Admiralty or North Bay, now Port Elizabeths great natural harbour, together with South East Bay, Grande Ance, Ance Fauvelles, Ance Hyby, Ance Babie, Ance Caribe, Ance Chemin, Bay Salabin, Pointe Brulée, Pointe au Diable, North East Point, and West Point. The mixture of French and English toponyms gives the sheet particular historical interest, reflecting Bequias recent transition from French to British control while retaining the older French naming of bays, points, and anchorages. A road or track is shown crossing the island from the northern coast toward the interior and the harbour, while hachured hills, dotted ground, and carefully worked coastal lines give a compact but detailed impression of the islands terrain. As a small island map, this has a strong appeal beyond the usual general maps of the Caribbean. It is not merely a regional outline, but a close survey of Bequia itself, showing its harbours, roads, relief, and named coastal features at a scale suitable for administrative and navigational use. The University of the West Indies describes this map as the earliest engraved chart of the island, underscoring the importance of the plate for the printed cartography of Bequia. Jefferys' engraving is both visually compelling and unusually informative, making it one of the most desirable eighteenth-century maps of the French Caribbean. Martinique is presented here under its eighteenth century English name Martinico as both a strategic island and a working colonial economy. The title states that it was made from surveys and observations by English engineers while the island was in British possession, referring to the brief British occupation after the capture of Martinique in 1762 and before its return to France. The engraving is rich with mountainous interiors rendered with dense hachuring, particularly in the north around Mont Pelé and through the broken central ranges. Roads, rivers, settlements, parishes, coastal points, bays, and anchorages are carefully named throughout the island. Among the principal places shown are St. Pierre, Le Carbet, Case Pilote, Fort Royal, La Caravelle, Cul de Sac Robert, Cul de Sac François, Cul de Sac du Vauclin, Cul de Sac Marin, Ste. Anne, and the Salines. The southern and eastern coasts are especially full of hydrographic information, with shoals, reefs, small islands, channels, and soundings marked in detail. The key makes the map particularly valuable as a document of Martiniques plantation geography. Jefferys distinguishes sugar works powered by cattle mills and water mills, and marks anchorages for large vessels separately from those suited to boats and smaller vessels. The inset plan of Cul de Sac Royal, the harbour of Fort Royal, now Fort de France, gives the map further importance. An unusually rich map of Grenada, capturing the island at the moment it passed from French to British imperial control. Jefferys and Sayer's engraving presents Grenada as both a strategic Caribbean harbour and a highly organised plantation landscape. This large and finely engraved map records Grenada soon after its transfer to Great Britain under the Treaty of Paris of 1763. The French title explicitly describes the island as ceded to Great Britain by the last Treaty of Peace, while the English title presents the map as a survey ordered by Governor Scott and engraved by Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to the King. The Treaty of Paris, signed on 10 February 1763, transferred Grenada, Saint Vincent, Dominica, and Tobago from France to Britain; later that year the Royal Proclamation created the new Government of Grenada, comprising Grenada, the Grenadines, Dominica, St. Vincent, and Tobago. Jefferys' engraving is unusually rich in local detail. The island is divided into its parishes or quartiers, with French place-names retained throughout, among them Sauteurs, Grand Marquis, Megrin, Bacolet, Calivini, Goyave, Grand Pauvre, Levera, and Cabesterre. Roads and tracks thread across the mountainous interior, including the Chemin royal, while small buildings, numbered estate parcels, cultivated grounds, and mill sites mark the settled and plantation landscape. The hachured mountains give Grenada a strongly modelled topography, with named elevations and inland features including Le Grand Étang, Mont St. George, Morne Vache, Mont St. Simon, Morne des Amandes, and Morne Rouge. The engraved observations note explains that the dotted line along the coast marks the Fifty Paces belonging to the King, a Crown reserve around the shoreline. It describes the islands mountains as forming fertile valleys, with numerous rivulets useful for water-mills serving the sugar plantations. The note singles out the eastern part, called the "Cabesterre," as having the best soil so has the most considerable settlements. It also records hot sulphurous and mineral springs, comments on the relative rarity of hurricanes, and states that no serpents or venomous animals were known on the island. These remarks turn the map into a concise British assessment of Grenadas economic prospects, water power, soils, settlements, and perceived natural advantages. The note describes the south-western coast, La Grande Baye, the harbour of St. Georges, is shown with soundings, anchorages, the careening place, Fort Royal, Redoute Monckton, Pointe St. Eloy, Pointe Cabrion, and the surrounding roads and hills as the true entrance of the port from the west-south-west. It records that men-of-war had anchored and careened there and praises the shelter from the prevailing winds. This emphasis reflects Grenadas strategic value within the Lesser Antilles, where harbour access, fortification, and plantation supply were closely connected.
