A scarce c. 1930's facsimile reproduction of the 1786 title work , Narrative of the Two Aerial Voyages of Doctor Jeffries with Monsieur Blanchard, which, per the foreword herein, "is now so rare that the (facsimile issued by the publishers noted above) has been prepared for distribution to libraries and universities so that this interesting and historically important volume may be available and more widely read than heretofore". Apart from that foreword, the facsimile is identical to that (now extremely rare) 1786 original. Of the facsimile, the foreword adds "no copies have been sold, and the entire edition has been distributed". The total number printed is not known. Quarto, hardboard boards (see scan), pastedown title label. Of however many copies still exist, this one, in Near Fine condition with no salient flaw and only a few points of minor peripheral wear, is certainly one of the finest available, the others having been in, as noted, libraries and universities. One of the rarest of English-language pieces on lighter-than-air aviation. Two Aerial Voyages is Dr. Jeffries' account of his two historic ballooning voyages: "The first voyage, on the Thirtieth of November, 1784, from London to Kent; The Second, on the Seventh of January, 1785, from England into France." The landing spot, in the Forest of Guines, in France, is memorialized by "The Column" (rear engraving). A historic rarity on two counts: it is the first English-language treatise on aeronautics by an American, and it's the record of the first crossing of the English Channel by a balloonist. LG3.
