Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Loss to spine, ink name on front endpaper. 1923 Hard Cover. v, 89 pp. Three Sisters, Russian drama in four acts by Anton Chekhov, first performed in Moscow in 1901 and published as Tri sestry in the same year. The Prozorov sisters (Olga, Masha, and Irina) yearn for the excitement of Moscow; their dreary provincial life is enlivened only by the arrival of the Imperial Army. The sisters? dreams of a new life are crushed when their brother marries a woman they consider ill-bred and mortgages the house. The characters of Three Sisters are outstanding examples of Chekhovian boredom, longing, and listlessness. The playwright portrays the sisters? social aspirations with sensitivity and irony, using them as emblems of Russian middle-class pretensions and despair.

Published in the 'Moscow Art Theatre Series of Russian Plays'Translated by Jenny Covan.Published in 1922.This copy is a former library book. The lending sheet and library information are on the rear free endpaper and its name embossed on the title page. The hardback cover is heavily worn and marked with the spine missing. The text block is intact but the binding is loose at the covers. There are pencil annotations on both sides of the free front endpaper. The pages are age yellowed. There are pencil annotations throughout the book - presumably in connection with a production. Despite this it is still very readable and provides an insight into a previous producer's thinking.
