Der findes intet skrift ligt kildemateriale fra de østgrønlandske indvandrere selv, da de hverken kunne læse eller skrive, hvorfor beskrivelsen af indvandringen primært må basere sig på materialet fra de danske kolonimyndigheder og den tyske Brødremission. Selv om kilderne er skrevet af europæere og afspejler en europæisk forståelse af omverden og et europæisk verdensbillede, så indeholder de også en række oplysninger, der tilsammen danner et tydeligt billede af samtidens østgrønlandske indvandring og af det samfund, som opstod i kølvandet på indvandringen. Fra indvandrerne selv er overleveret fortællinger om livet i Sydøstgrønland og enkelte dramatiske begivenheder, der fandt sted i årene op til 1900, hvor de sidste sydøstgrønlændere forlod den sydligste østkyst.
