Ihre Reise führt sie durch Wald und Stadt und konfrontiert sie mit technischen Geräten, die ausrangiert, ersetzt oder verschrottet wurden. Die vermenschlichten Haushaltsgegenstände stehen für unterschiedliche Temperamente und bilden eine Gemeinschaft, die von gegenseitiger Abhängigkeit, Streit und Zusammenhalt geprägt ist. Hinter der kindgerechten Abenteuergeschichte behandelt der Film auch die Bindung an vertraute Dinge, die Angst vor dem Weggeworfenwerden und den Gegensatz zwischen älteren, reparierbaren Geräten und einer auf ständige Erneuerung ausgerichteten Konsumwelt. Besonders die Szenen im Ersatzteillager und auf dem Schrottplatz verleihen der Erzählung einen stellenweise ungewöhnlich düsteren Ton. Der Film basiert auf der 1980 veröffentlichten Erzählung The Brave Little Toaster des amerikanischen Science-Fiction-Autors Thomas M. Disch. Unter der Regie von Jerry Rees entstand daraus eine unabhängige Produktion von Hyperion Pictures, an der mehrere später im Umfeld der amerikanischen Animationsfilmindustrie bekannte Zeichner und Autoren beteiligt waren. Der 1987 erschienene Film verbindet traditionelle Zeichentrickanimation mit Elementen des Musicals und unterscheidet sich durch seine melancholischen und technisch-kulturgeschichtlichen Untertöne von vielen zeitgenössischen Kinderfilmen. Später folgten zwei weitere Filme mit denselben Figuren.
