[Jerusalem] [Holy Land] [Jaffa] Bonfils, Félix Adrien. Jerusalem views, c. 1880s, document the circulation of commercially produced photographic imagery of the Holy Land within late nineteenth century European and American visual culture, supporting research into Ottoman Palestine, early mass tourism, and the construction of sacred geography through photography. Produced by one of the first large-scale commercial photographers operating in the Middle East, the images establish how Jerusalem was framed for external audiences through carefully composed views of religious monuments, fortified architecture, and active urban spaces. The photographs provide direct visual evidence of the city prior to twentieth century political transformation, with particular emphasis on Christian pilgrimage sites, Islamic architectural presence, and everyday economic activity occurring alongside monumental structures. Three original albumen photographs, each approximately 11 x 8.5 inches, unmounted, depicting distinct but related views of Jerusalem. One image, captioned "255 Eglise Ste-Anne et vue generale de Jerusalem," presents St. Anne's Church within a wider panoramic view of the ???????, combining ecclesiastical architecture with dense urban settlement. A second photograph shows the fortress near the Jaffa Gate, with a foreground market scene including carts, animals, and clustered goods, documenting commercial exchange occurring directly adjacent to the city's defensive walls. The third image depicts the Golden Gate, emphasizing masonry detail and the monumental scale of Jerusalem's eastern wall, a site of longstanding religious significance in Jewish and Islamic traditions. Each photograph bears the characteristic compositional clarity and captioning style associated with Bonfils' studio production. Produced during the final decades of Ottoman administration, these photographs align with the expansion of photographic tourism and the increased circulation of Holy Land imagery among European and American audiences seeking visual access to biblical and historical sites. Bonfils' work functioned within a broader commercial network supplying images to travelers, scholars, and institutions, shaping how Jerusalem was documented, interpreted, and disseminated internationally. Light surface wear, minor tonal variation, and occasional creasing consistent with albumen prints of the period; overall very good condition. Together, the group provides a cohesive visual record of Jerusalem's architectural, religious, and commercial landscape at a moment when photography played a central role in defining the city's global historical image.…
