Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Forbidden City photos by Chen Jiagang introduction by Eric Shiner China Square Publishing Co. 2007 PB First Edition ISBN 9780979578519 Photography of "the Third Front," the industrial cities of the southwest provinces of Guizhou, Sichan and Yunnan, which were quickly constructed during the 1960s. During the course of the factories' construction and operation, millions of workers were relocated to these cities comprising China's "Third Front" creating economic boomtowns overnight. But just as quickly, they were abandoned when China turned towards a market economy in the 1980s. The Third Front disappeared almost overnight, and the workers who left to return to their hometowns left behind ghost towns. Chen Jiagang uses photography to capture the specters of industry that still reside there. NEAR FINE, spine is not creased, binding is tight, slight bit of edgewear to rear lower corner, a 1" x ½" area of cover laminate is slightly separating, a manufacturing defect. Very clean interior with no writing, marks no underlining.

Originally situated on China's coast and in the North close to the Russian border, these factories were obliged to relocate to the country's heartland, hidden away and better protected. So the 'Third Line' was created. One by one factories were closed down and the workers went back to their homes, leaving the area abandoned, full of ghost towns, in the truest sense of the word, captured here in the photos of Chen Jiagang.
