Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The great granite quarries of the North East are silent now, as are virtually all of the 100 granite yards that existed in Aberdeen around the year 1900. Granite is the most unyielding of building materials but from the mid-18th century the granite men of the North East hewed this material from the bowels of the earth and used it to fashion buildings; paved the streets and embankments of London with it; built bridges over the Thames with it, created monuments for kings and commoners not only in Britain but all over the world. This is the story of those granite men and their industry. AUTHOR: Jim Fiddes went to Aberdeen Grammar School and received an Honours Degree in History from Aberdeen University. He started his career as a librarian, and spent 29 years at The Robert Gordon University, mostly as librarian for the School of Architecture and Construction, and the School of Art. He retired early and spent five seasons as a guide for the National Trust for Scotland at the iconic fairytale castle of Craigievar. He lives in Abderdeenshire. 75 illustrations A comprehensive history of the industries of the Granite City of Aberdeen Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
