Paperback: 7" x 4½". Condizione: Very Good: Light signs of wear. 1995 Edition. © 1994: A stand-alone novel by Paul J McAuley. 1st printing of 1995 edition:- Synopsis: Florence, 1518. Da Vinci's astonishing machines work, and the Industrial Revolution has happened centuries early. When Pasquale, a young painter, teams up with the… hard-drinking journalist Machiavegli to investigate a murder in a locked tower room, they stumble into a conspiracy of politics, necromancy and assassination - and as they pursue the case through Florence's acetylene-lit streets the only certainty is that they could be next on the hit list:- Review(s): "The merest nudge of Da Vinci's elbow, and everything flows with a delicious and lucid inevitability: photography, firearms, Chaos maths, Copernican particle physics and steam-truck chases through the streets of Florence. You look up, when you finish 'Pasquale's Angel' and wonder what reality is still doing in place" - Colin Greenland / "With this book, Paul McAuley proves he's an artist of uncommon depth and range" - Pat Cardigan / "A brilliantly sustained and controlled flight of imagination written with a fluency and vividness I'd kill for. A real treat, and a major novel from a writer whose prose is a delight to read" - Ramsey Campbell:- (original cost £5.99). Cover Art: Jim Burns (illustratore).

Hardback: 9¼" x 6¼". Condizione: Very Good: Light signs of wear. 1st Edition. © 1994: A stand-alone novel by Paul J McAuley. 1st edition, 1st printing. Price clipped & light tanning to text block:- Synopsis: Florence, in the year 1518. The most powerful of the Italian states, the city is riven by the changes brought about by the… devices of the Great Engineer, Leonardo da Vinci. Steamships ply the canal which links Florence with the sea; steam-powered factories flood the economy with mass-produced goods, the Arno with noxious pollution and the air with choking smog; submarines, land ironclads, poison gas and sophisticated weaponry have confounded Florence's enemies from Rome to the Gulf of Mexico. But da Vinci is an old man now, a recluse in his Florentine tower waiting, as rumour has it, for the new Flood that will sweep away the wickedness of the world. The Medici Pope, Leo X, is due to grace the city with his presence and reconcile Florence with her old enemy, Rome. Pasquale, young pupil of the painter Rosso, is eager to meet the immensely successful artist Raphael, who has arrived in Florence on a mysterious mission on behalf of the Pope. But when one of Raphael's entourage is brutally killed in a locked tower room, Pasquale finds himself involved in a murder investigation carried out by the cynical, hard-drinking journalist Niccolo Machiavegli - and, as the murders continue, in a deepening conspiracy. Politics, necromancy, and the discovery that the GReat Engineer has far from retired mean that nothing is ever as it seems. The only certainty, as Pasquale and Machiavegli pursue the case through Florence's acetylene-lit streets, is that they could be next on the list:- Review(s): "'Pasqual's Angel' is part thriller, part historical novel, and part novel of ideas. This is the Renaissance as it might have been if da Vinci had worked as an engineer rather than an artist - compulsively readable and convincing in every detail":- (original cost £15.99). Hardback: 9¼" x 6¼". Condizione: Near Fine: Small signs of wear. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. © 1993: A stand-alone novel by Paul J McAuley. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: After the Yankees failed to terraform Mars, the Chinese succeeded, by conscripting millions of Tibetans to do the hard dangerous w…ork of making the Red Planet's deserts bloom. But five hundred years later the terraforming programme has been halted and Mars is dying, slowly reverting to its original cold dry state. The human-machine Consensus of Earth - the Conchies - has persuaded the AI Emperor of Mars to follow the Golden Path into the vast virtual reality universe created and governed by the Consensus. The population left behind faces hunger riots, the beginnings of civil war, and a creeping despair. Wei Lee is the son of diplomat parents who vanished after a mission to the anarchist colonies of the asteroid belt, where the last free humans live. Now a lowly itinerant agricultural technician, he roams Mars seeking work and using a rogue librarian program in an attempt to discover what happened to his parents. But when he stumbles on an anarchist pilot, hiding near the wreckage of her spacecraft, he is unwittingly drawn into a plot that was spinning even before he was born. Suddenly Wei Lee - rock 'n' roll fan, womaniser, dupe, rebel and holy fool - finds that he has been fated to become the most unlikely Messiah since L Ron Hubbard. With the help of a ghost, the broadcasts of the King of the Cats, a Yankee yak herder and a little Girl God, Lee travels from a Tibetan lamasery lost in the Martian Badlands through the teeming cities, swampy waterways and vast dust seas of the Red Planet to a showdown at the summit of the biggest volcano in the Solar System and a final battle in a pocket heaven in the virtual reality universe for the survival of Mars and of humanity itself. And not even the God-like Consensus can predict the outcome of Lee's struggle to define his own destiny. Epic in scope, 'Red Dust' confirms Paul McAuley's place as Britain's best radical hard sf writer in a spectacular fast-paced story that brilliantly brings to life the planet that has captured our imagination like no other:- Review(s): "Everyone's going to Mars this year, but no one's going as imaginatively as Paul J McAuley. McAuley didn't forget to pack all the essentials for a good time, like excitement, adventure, and fascinating, unforgettable people. Take the ride - Mars won't get any better than this" - Pat Cadigan, winner of the Arthur C Clarke Award 1992:- (original cost £15.99). Cover Art: Jim Burns (illustratore).

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. How do you identify and stop a serial killer? This problem is difficult enough when the villain follows the usual patterns of selecting similar victims, or murdering his prey in the same manner, or killing in a limited geographic area. But it becomes infinitely more difficult when an intell…igent criminal expert, someone who has written a book on deadly crimes and how to investigate them, is responsible. Jack Goodman, the serial killer, is cunning enough to hide his heinous activities in plain site by making them appear to be accidents, gang killings, suicides, robberies gone wrong, and drug overdoses. He also murders victims over a large geographic area. He can do this because he has developed an avocation that allows him to move around freely while identifying and casing targets without drawing suspicion. His methods and meticulous planning explain why Goodman, a wealthy resident of Staunton, Virginia has successfully accomplished his killings throughout Augusta and Rockingham counties. Goodman's wealth came through an inheritance when his wife died under suspicious circumstances. After settling into Staunton and working for years to develop his plan, he began his "south valley campaign" just six months ago. During this brief time he has built up a staggeringly large number of victims without the least bit of suspicion that a serial killer is operating in the area. When the supervisors of both counties hold public hearings addressing the slightly higher death rates in their regions, they vote to establish an intergovernmental task force to investigate. The main purpose of the task force is to shift the responsibility to the two county sheriffs. After trying unsuccessfully to escape the task, each sheriff finally assigns his best investigator to serve on the task force. The two people selected, Dan Showalter and Becky Yoder, have a history. They were lovers two decades ago. Now they are thrown together and have to deal with what appears, at first, to be a throwaway assignment, determining whether or not a few more additional deaths really amount to anything. Dan is the son of country farmers. His socialite wife has deep misgivings about the new partnership. Becky is the daughter of an old order Mennonite farm couple. She left the religion in early adulthood. Other key characters include Dan's humorous neighbor, Idamay Jones, and Harry Shipplett a former Special Forces soldier. The two county sheriffs also play important supporting roles. One is straight-laced, formal, and new to the job. The other is comical but competent. Because the two counties lie at the southern end of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the Valley itself is a central character in the book. Dan and Becky utilize very different approaches to investigation, which causes them to clash at times. They finally determine that there must be someone conducting serial killings. But who is doing it? Becky and Dan ultimately enter into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game that leads to even more killings. There is a strong possibility that the investigation will be taken over by the state police if they don't resolve the case quickly and engage in some deception. How far does Becky and Dan's new relationship go? Will Dan's marriage last? How will the deadly cat-and-mouse game end? This novel of over 124,000 words answers these questions. Readers who enjoy travelling to the locations and businesses identified in novels can certainly do so with this one. It should be noted that there is strong language in Clarity, which might offend some. This is the first in the Shenandoah Mystery series, and a web site (shenandoahmysteries.com) provides insights into Clarity and the next novel Farmer's Daughter Recommended, which should be available by January 2016. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
