Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "Published in conjunction with the first North American survey of the work of Jimmie Durham, this beautifully illustrated catalogue explores Durham's vital contributions to contemporary art since the 1970s, both in the US and internationally. Born of Cherokee descent, in 1940s Arkansas, Jimmie Durham takes up such issues as the politics of representation, histories of genocide, and citizenship and exile. This volume collects an array of Durham's sculptures, drawings, photography, video, and performance. It includes essays about Durham's material choices and their metaphoric potential; his participation in the NYC art scene in the 1980s; his use of language; and his ties to Mexico after living in Cuernavaca. An interview with Durham traces his involvement with the American Indian Movement and his self-exile from the US, which along with his essays and poetry, illuminate his life and work. This book provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Durham, arguably one of the most important artists working today." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Jimmie Durham: post-American, by Anne Ellegood; Jimmie Durham: self-portrait, by Elisabeth Sussman; Jimmie Durham's stones and bones, by Jessica L. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Jimmie Durham (born 1940) is an artist, political activist, and writer living in Berlin and Rome. "Material" is his contribution to the Documenta 100 Notes - 100 Thoughts publishing project. "We live in a world of our own construction ., and I want to look at that strangeness in the framework of material," the artist Jimmie Durham says. Taking the form of notes from a series of lectures given in Venice, Durham explores our relationship to the world through materials, whether they are concrete substance such as wood, oak, petroleum, or plastics, or abstract, theoretical matters such as math, prime numbers, or computing. His notebook breathes life into the notion that "our knowledge of the world comes from the way we are constructed. We construct the world as we are constructed." By using wood and petroleum as his focal points, he leads us through the history of the construction of Venice, to a sculpture and its built-in mistake, and finally to how the tissue in fish is filled with so much plastic that a scientist friend no longer eats the animals.
