Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Jiri Kroha (illustratore). 1st Edition. Quarto 28x19 cm., wrappers. 5 issues (Year I, issues 1-5; all published): April-November 1921. Each issue a bifolium (4 pp.), except No. 2 (May), 8 pp., with an original woodcut insert by Ji?í Kroha as a promotion. The woodcut is a full size 28x19 cm. A rare complete survival of this short-lived Czech avant-garde theatre bulletin, issued by the association Socialistická scéna, which was active in the immediate post WW1 period. The group?associated with figures such as Ji?í Kroha, Karel M. Klos, and Karel Hugo Hilar among others?sought to develop a new form of politically engaged "mass theatre," aligned with the revolutionary socialist climate of the early 1920s. The striking woodcut masthead is used throughout and the separately issued placard present here by Kroha?later a major figure of Czech modernist architecture and scenography?embody the synthesis of visual art, typography, and political messaging characteristic of the movement. Published as a monthly organ, the periodical in practice appeared only irregularly, with four consecutive issues (April-July) followed by a final number in November. It combines programmatic essays, organizational reports, and theoretical reflections on modern stage practice, documenting an important moment of transition between prewar theatrical traditions and the emerging Czech avant-garde. The bulletin Socialistická scéna ceased after 1921 as the organization itself entered a period of reorientation and consolidation. Activities continued under shifting structures and, significantly, under the related title V?elidová scéna ("People's Stage"), reflecting a broader ambition to reach a wider public beyond strictly socialist circles. The discontinuation of Socialistická scéna group thus appears to have been less a cessation than a transition into new organizational and ideological forms, still shaped by financial instability, limited membership resources, and the rapidly evolving landscape of left-wing cultural movements in the early interwar Czechoslovakia. Truly uncommon, with no institutional holdings found worldwide.
