Im Mittelpunkt steht die Analyse der Exegese, welche diesen Prozess ermöglichte.Die Arbeit besteht aus drei Teilen: Im ersten werden frühe Lesarten (ca. 4.-3. Jh. v.Chr.) von annalistischen Texten allgemein und dieser Hofchronik speziell als Vorläufer der späteren systematischen Exegese dargestellt. Im zweiten und ausführlichsten Teil wird zunächst eine Analyse der exegetischenMethode des frühesten maßgeblichen Kommentars, des Gongyang zhuan, sowie von deren Bezug zu hermeneutischen Techniken der Omendeutung vorgenommen. Danach folgt eine Untersuchung zu dessen inhaltlichem Anliegen sowie ein Versuch zu dessen Datierung. Im dritten Teil wird die Weiterentwicklung der Exegese von dem rituell und moralisch ausgerichteten Gongyang-Kommentar hin zum pragmatischen Rechtskommentar DongZhongshus (2. Jh. v.Chr.) gezeigt.
