The immediate response has been a turn toward a host of energy-saving technologies. What has rarely been addressed, however, is the problem of scale. How can designers make sure that global solutions do not come at the expense of local cultures and environments? By placing human rational, emotional, technological, and social needs at the center of our environmental concerns, this book proposes a new global design initiative. The aim is to develop a language of design that can create proximity between individual responsibility and the current global environmental crisis. These featured projects showcase leading-edge design innovations at multiple scales. Global Design NYU directors Peder Anker, Louise Harpman, and Mitchell Joachim discuss various ways in which design can reformat the unfortunate separation between humans and the natural world.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Architecture must not only be functionally green, but its formal, conceptual and physical properties also need to constitute a novel and integrated living material system, one that can flourish within the larger world around it. XXL-XS represents the emerging discipline of ecological design by assembling a wide range of innovators with diverse interests. Geo-engineering, synthetic biology, construction site co-robotics, low-energy fabrication, up-cycling waste, minimally invasive design, living materials, and molecular self-assembly are just a few of the important advances explored in the book. At one extreme are massive public works, at the other, micro to nano-sized interventions that can have equally profound impacts on our world. From terraforming to bio-manufacturing, a whole new generation of designers is proposing unique ways of confronting the difficult challenges ahead. In this way design becomes a totality of relationships that affects all disciplines, which can no-longer be thought of as self-contained fields, each handled separately by narrowly focused specialists. Globalization demands a restructuring of the profession, as we know it.This requires a new breed of generalists who can work across fields and engage research on multiple sites around the globe. Today we need planetary designers versed in the craft of integral design. Our thesis is therefore both global and performative in scope. We need an architecture that is more than just a constellation of bio-picturesque images, digitally generated surface effects, and conventional materials. We seek a holistic architecture that uses the best techniques to connect directly with existing natural systems while creating a renewed ecology that can sustain itself well into the future. Along these lines, many of the projects featured in this book simply abandon the old tropes and construction processes of the past by creating numerous green alternatives that proliferate along unexpected pathways. Architecture must not only be functionally green, but its formal, conceptual and physical properties also need to constitute a novel and integrated living material system, one that can flourish within the larger world around it. Condizione: FINE. First printing in wrappers. No hardcover edition. 'The Occident' is the name of the literary journal published by the University of California since 1881 - although often sporadically. In the early years, it published such writers as Bret Harte and Jack London, and in the 70's and 80's, contributors included Allen Ginsburg, Gary Snyder, Joan Didion, Raymond Carver and many others. This issue both continues the tradition of publishing good and sometimes controversial writers and also looks at the 'shifting map' of the Occident and invited writers from outside the European-American perspective to contribute 'in any form.' The diverse voices found here include Kathy Acker, Ann Banfield, Omar Castaneda ,Jewell Gomez.Thom Gunn, Yusef Komunyaaka, Gordon Lish, Heather McHugh Bharati Mukherjee, Gloria Naylor, Ismael Reed, Alberto Rios, Peter Spagnuolo, Gerald Vizenor, John Yau and others. SIGNED by Jewelle Gomez at "Two Poems." Notes on contributors. 192 pp. We specialize in literary journals, and have many others - including many not yet catalogued and listed on line. Fine in stiff illustrated black wrappers.
