A silky-haired black Cocker puppy, full of mischief, with an appealing eye and busy tail-wag for his friends, and a good hearty bark and bite for his enemies - this is Daniel, whose adventurous first year of life is described here. The Fairbairn family, his first owners, take him to live in town and make a great fuss of him; then with a new master, Alastair, he goes 'on the road' for the summer months and makes himself really useful, nosing out rabbits for the stockpot and even saving Alastair's life.
