Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. THE TEMPLAR'S CHART or HIEROGLYPHIC MONITOR. Containing All the Emblems and Hieroglyphics Explained in the Valiant and Magnanimous Orders of Knights of the Red Cross, Knights Templars; and Knights of Malta, or Order of St. John of Jerusalem. By JEREMY CROSS. [Knights Templar - Masonic Order, Masons, Knights of Malta, Freemasonry. Occult, Fraternal Orders] NEW HAVEN (Conn.): Published and sold by the author; Sold also by A. H. Maltby & Co., Printers, New Haven, [and others], 1821. FIRST EDITION. Hardcovers, leather covered boards, 4x6.25 inches. Pagination: [2], vi, 10-157 pages + 21 plates at the rear (plates nos. 1-20 are numbered, followed by an unnumbered plate). ILLUSTRATED with a frontispiece engraving, 21 engraved plates, and masonic musical scores (pp. 111-156). The frontispiece engraving states that it was engraved by S.S. Jocelyn NH (Simeon Smith Jocelyn, of New Haven, Connecticut, b.1799 d.1879). Though he is only credited on the frontispiece, it is widely accepted that he engraved all the plates in this book. (S.S. Jocelyn and his brother Nathaniel Jocelyn, b.1796 d.1881, founded and ran a New Haven engraving company under the name N. & S. S. Jocelyn. In 1858, the Jocelyn brothers gave a piece of land to the city of New Haven to be used as a public park and playground. It is now known as Jocelyn Square.) Important Association Copy: SIGNED TWICE by the previous owner JOHN BLEECKER of the New York Bleecker family (think Bleecker Street), with his bold signature on two of the blank front flyleaves. John Bleecker, b.1763 d.1833, was a wealthy merchant and major regional landholder who split his time between his primary residence on Pearl Street in Albany and his vast country estates in Saratoga County. During this time, the civic elite of Albany and Saratoga - including the Bleecker family, and families like the Schuylers and Van Rensselaers (John married Elizabeth Van Rensselaer Schuyler in 1800) - were heavily involved in New York Freemasonry. There were even important Masonic Lodges and a Masonic Press on Bleecker Street. The other "John Bleeckers" of the Bleecker family in this era were John Rutger Bleecker (the prominent surveyor and patriarch) who died in 1800; John N. Bleecker (the Revolutionary War military commissary and treasurer) who died in 1812 and always signed as John N. Bleecker or Jno. N. Bleecker to prevent confusion with his cousins; and an earlier John Bleecker, b. circa 1762 d.1807, a Loyalist cousin who died in Canada in 1807. GOOD condition: Professionally restored, the covers and spine have rubs, scrapes, and chipping to their leather covering, but are sturdily bound and doing their job well; internally, there is offsetting from the leather covers to the margins of the first and last few blank flyleaves, edgewear and a some small edge tears to the front and rear endpapers, age toning to the pages as normal, and light foxing here and there throughout, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy. RARE 1821 FIRST EDITION printed in NEW HAVEN with an IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION to the NEW YORK BLEECKER FAMILY. (Simeon Smith Jocelyn (illustratore). …
