Jochmann (1789 ¿ 1830) der Vergessenheit entrissen haben, findet besonders dessen Abhandlung 'Die Rückschritte der Poesie' zunehmend Interesse. Gegen den Zeitgeist, insbesondere gegen die Kunstauffassung der Romantik, verteidigt Jochmann ¿ in gesellschaftskritischer und kunsttheoretischer Hinsicht ¿ den Fortschrittsgedanken der europäischen Aufklärung. Im Anschluß an Hamann, Herder und Rousseau, besonders aber an Vico, begreift Jochmann den Verfall der früheren Hochformen der Dichtkunst als das entwicklungsgeschichtlich notwendige Resultat des zivilisatorischen Fortschritts, als Folge der Emanzipation der Phantasie zur wissenschaftlichen Vernunft. Darin liegt für Jochmann jedoch keine Aufforderung zur Preisgabe der Kunst, sondern zur Anerkenntnis des geschichtlichen Wandels, dem Formen und Aufgaben der Kunst unterliegen. Benjamin sagte über den Text, daß ihm 'was die sprachliche Gestalt anbetrifft, in seiner Zeit weniges, was seinen Gehalt angeht, im 19. Jahrhundert nichts an die Seite zu stellen ist.'.
