L'indianité a-t-elle survécu à l'évangélisation et quelle influence les religions indiennes ont-elles exercée sur le christianisme ? Partant de l'exemple des Sioux Lakotas et des Pueblos du Rio Grande Joëlle Rostkowski a voulu répondre à ces questions tout en les replaçant dans l'histoire américaine. Au fil de son enquête il apparaît que la diffusion du christianisme depuis les premières missions jusqu'à la période contemporaine qui voit renaître les religions traditionnelles fut nettement différente selon les communautés les modes de conversion les zones de répartition des missions catholiques ou protestantes. Cet essai rédigé à partir de documents historiques (archives religieuses histoire locale et tribale) et de témoignages actuels pose avant tout le problème de la confrontation entre une religion traditionnelle fondée sur la sacralité d'une vision cosmique et une religion du salut qui se prétendant unique s'est heurtée à des forces souterraines qu'elle n'a pu maîtriser. Le récit passionnant de cette conversion inachevée entraîne le lecteur au carrefour des cultures et des religions. Very Good.
