Diesen Zeitgeist fasste Franz Marc im Einklang mit unzähligen Äusserungen seiner Zeitgenossen so zusammen: »In unserer Epoche des großen Kampfes um die neue Kunst streiten wir als Wilde, nicht Organisierte gegen eine alte, organisierte Macht. Der Kampf scheint ungleich; aber in geistigen Dingen siegt nie die Zahl sondern die Stärke der Ideen.« Die Ausstellung in der Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn und der vom Kurator Uwe M. Schneede sorgfältig edierte Katalog versammeln jedoch keinesfalls nur die bekannten Quellen und Protagonisten, sondern gehen den entscheidenden Schritt weiter.
