Ik wil met genoegen deze catalogus aanraken door er een woord vooraf te schrijven en daardoor te stellen dat deze tentoonstelling wel in Gent plaatsvindt, maar dat 'Gent' meteen een ruimer perspectief inhoudt dan het hier en nu. Wie zich maatschappelijk verantwoordelijk voelt voor de kunst, is bekommerd om wat leeft: theater, een muziekopvoering, de beeldende kunstenaars die hun eigen weg gaan, vandaag, nu niets meer zo vanzelfsprekend is als in de zestiende eeuw, zelfs de liefde niet. Maar de verantwoordelijkheid voor de cultuur vraagt een ruimere blik. Als het enkel zou gaan om wat er vandaag wordt geproduceerd, en dan nog enkel om de kunsten, om wat deze tijd verschillend maakt van de vorige, dan zouden die kunsten hun uitdagingen missen. Die uitdagingen zijn twee rlei. Er is de maatschappij in de volle breedte waarin de kunsten hun realisatie vinden. en er is het verleden.
