Aggiungi al carrelloComplete two volume set in matching cloth bindings. Both first editions (not stated but per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). BOTH VOLUMES WITH OWNERSHIP INSCRIPTION OF CONFEDERATE ARMY GENERAL MILLEDGE LUKE BONHAM. Hardcovers: H 20cm x L 13.25cm. Pebble reddish-brown cloth rubbed with some stains; shallow chipping… at frayed spine ends; some wear to bumped board corners; slight dulling/flaking to spines' gilt stamping but all still easily legible. Text block edges toned and stained. Interior foxing/toning with some stains and soiling. Bindings have some stress points at quires but otherwise remain reasonably firm. Both volumes each now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which enhances their shelf presence. ***** VOLUME I: [frontis b/w portrait], i-xiv, 15-400 pages. Front free endpaper recto glued down to front pastedown; front free endpaper verso has ink inscription "W.M. Drake | Nov 1954" at top right with personal bookplate of J.M. Bateman at center (possibly Copiah County, Mississippi poet and academic James A. Bateman); front flyleaf recto top half has two inscriptions "M L Bonham | 1860" in pencil and pen followed by a bottom-half four-line pencil inscription "M.L. Bonham | Columbia | SC | JJune 16/80" written by a different hand with greater flair in a more bold cursive. Initial two inscriptions match handwriting example found online of Confederate Army of the Potomac Brigadier General Milledge Luke Bonham (1813-1890) who served as governor of South Carolina (1862-1864) and also served two antebellum terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1857-1860); the secondary inscription might possibly be by General Bonham's namesake son (1854-1943). On frontispiece's blank recto are two pencil inscriptions emulating John Quitman but stylistically matching the letter shapes of the ffep secondary cursive writing. ***** VOLUME II: [frontis b/w plan], i-vi, 7-392 pages. Front pastedown again has Bateman bookplate along with 1954 Drake inscription as well as two-line ink inscription "M.L. Bonham | 1860" at top; first rear flyleaf removed; boldly written pencil calculations and notes on rectos of second rfly and rfep; two newspaper clippings dated from 1898 and 1899 affixed to rear pastedown. ***** John Quitman and Milledge Bonham both served in the Mexican-American War with later political overlap as Quitman served in the U.S. House of Representatives from March 1855 until his death on July 17, 1858 coinciding with Bonham's first congressional term. Set was acquired from a Hazlehurst, Copiah County, Mississippi estate with no preceding provenance known. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and may require additional postage/insurance for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
