As a result of this oration, Breckinridge literally talked himself into the army. He was commissioned a major of the 3rd Kentucky Volunteers, which he led into Mexico, arriving, however, too late for military action. Later, he would prove himself an admirable soldier in the Confederacy, leading men in several major engagements and ultimately named as the Confederate Secretary of War. He also served as a United States Senator, and Vice President of the United States.…
