Original full leather binding; strong scuffing/rubbing to boards, rear board's top corner worn, spine decorated with five raised bands with abutting horizontal gilt bars which are mostly flaked away, spine's second compartment has brown title label with bright gilt title lettering and border but with slender fractional loss at bottom border, dulled gilt stamped "3" in spine's third compartment, some scuffing at spine ends. A few rear leaves have some abrasion at fore-edges; staining and toning to endpapers; past bookseller's modern ballpoint ink price at front free endpaper's top right corner; antiquarian ink owner signature on rear pastedown; some toning and occasional foxing spots to interior leaves. He also authored a definitive biography of the famous Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1687).ABOUT THIS SET: Contemporary, very large bindings, this listing includes Volumes II, III & IV from the complete four-volume set -- please note that Volume I is NOT present. Bound in matching full brown leather, likely sheepskin, covers are plain. Hubbed spines bear six raised bands. Volume II still has one dark burgundy leather label stamped in gilt lettering. Leather spine labels on Volumes III and IV are missing, but blind stamped lettering is visible. All three title pages are printed in red and black ink with small engraving at the foot. Large, intricate portraiture engravings occasionally throughout all three volumes in black and white. These very large quartos measure 16.75 inches tall x 10.75 inches wide and vary in thickness from 1.5 inches to 2 inches. This large-sized binding is rare in quarto -- books are rectangular and chain lines do run vertically, (rather than the common horizontal lines in quarto), yet the gatherings/signatures are distinctly 4 leaves (8 pages). Even so the textblocks are quite bright and well preserved with bold, highly legible text and only occasional foxing or discoloration. Previous owner's antiquarian bookplate affixed to the front pastedowns. Completely unmarked except for pencil notations on the front flyleaves.
