Letters addressed to the Surveyor General of Iowa and Wisconsin, Caleb Booth. Reporting the surveyors work in the field, laying out what was then the near West. Blue stationery, 15" x 9" folded in half, with flattened mailing folds. All letters are docketed on the rear with a concise description: "Informing me what he had done in Smiths district requesting instructions how to proceed", "Returning his executed contract and bond", and "Forwards blanks for account, connecting and direction". The letters are a bit more lively than that, including: A falling tree killing another surveyor, the rigors and hard going of the crew, disgruntled Settlers disappointed with Nebraska, but Omaha City is improving." All items in fine condition. "1849 Dear Sir.I send herewith the papers, all executed. I have obtained the Standard measure from the Chain of S. Sanders that was adjusted at your office.I am anxious to execute the work before the ground freezes. 1851 Dear Sir.Before this reaches you , I presume you will have heard of the fatal accident.when he was killed by the falling of a tree across his camp.and there we found where they camped on the night of the storm.1854 Sir. I have supplied the missions as desired by return mail".
