When I find a book that is more than 200 years old, and in very good condition, it is a cause for celebration. Please find one, to wit: The New York Justice; or a Digest of the Law Relative to Justices of the Peace in the State of New York by John A. Dunlap, Esq. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 9 inches, 476 pages) was published by Isaac Riley of New York, dated 1815. The book is bound in full calf leather with a paste-down red leather spine label with gilt lettering. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The calf leather is rubbed and bumped with a few minor abrasions and the small track of a burrowing insect. I was astonished to find that the book is unmarked, neither by a former owner at the front or by anyone else throughout the text. The interior pages are quite toned but without affecting the legibility of the text; there are no real incidences of foxing. The endpapers are speckled with fine dark dots, both front and rear but it is not clear why these are present. The final two blank pages were roughly torn from the book (probably to remove some personal annotations). Both hinges are cracked but the binding still feels tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
