Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an innovative method for selecting candidates in democratic elections and explores its potential to revolutionize the electoral process. Known as 'approval voting', this simple yet effective system allows voters to genuinely assess their preferences by permitting them to 'approve' of as many or as few candidates as they wish. The author presents a detailed analysis of the system's application in a real-life election, demonstrating how it can lead to different and potentially more representative outcomes compared to traditional plurality voting. By delving into the nuances of electoral systems and their impact on democratic representation, this book offers valuable insights for political scientists, scholars, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of modern democracies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an experimental examination and historical analysis of approval voting, an electoral system in which voters can vote for as many candidates as they approve of, rather than just one. While similar to ordinary plurality voting, approval voting permits a more nuanced expression of voter preferences, making it more likely to elect candidates supported by a broader segment of the population. The author presents the results of the first major field test of approval voting alongside retrospective analyses of past elections. These demonstrate that approval voting can identify the most widely supported candidates and can overturn plurality election outcomes, especially in three-way races between similar candidates. The book also examines theoretical considerations, including how voters distribute their approvals and the potential for strategic voting. This book provides valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of approval voting and its potential to improve democratic elections. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the structural behavior of a reinforced-concrete arch during and after its construction. It is based on tests conducted on one of the arches of the Arlington Memorial Bridge. The author describes the experimental setup used to collect data on temperature changes, deflections, and deformations, and provides a detailed analysis of the results. The book includes discussions on the temperature rise of the arch during concrete hardening, the effect of temperature changes on arch deformation, and the impact of the superstructure on arch behavior. The author also explores the influence of shrinkage and time-dependent deformations on arch deflections. The book contributes to the understanding of structural behavior in reinforced-concrete arches, offering insights into their response to temperature, load, and time-related effects. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book describes a system of VLSI layout tools called IDA which stands for 'Integrated Design Aides. ' It is not a main-line production CAD environment, but neither is it a paper tool. Rather, IDA is an experimental environment that serves to test out CAD ideas in the crucible of real chip design. Many features have been tried in IDA over the years, some successfully, some not. This book will emphasize the former, and attempt to describe the features that have been useful and effective in building real chips. Before discussing the present state of IDA, it may be helpful to understand how the project got started. Although Bell Labs has traditionally had a large and effective effort in VLSI and CAD, researchers at the Murray Hill facility wanted to study the process of VLSI design independently, emphasizing the idea of small team chip building. So, in 1979 they invited Carver Mead to present his views on MOS chip design, complete with the now famous 'lambda' design rules and 'tall, thin designers. ' To support this course, Steve Johnson (better known for YACC and the portable C compiler) and Sally Browning invented the constraint based 'i' language and wrote a compiler for it. A small collection of layout tools developed rapidly around this compiler, including design rule checkers, editors and simulators.…
