Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: poor. Presumed First Edition, First printing. x, 384, [6] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Glossary. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpapers. Inscription reads: For Pat Strickland, Best regards, and my respects to a fine writer. Rex Smith, 9/6/57…. The DJ is work, torn, soiled, and chipped. The editor (and often translator) was a Vice President of American Airlines who had a decades long love of Spanish bullfighting. He was a former correspondent in Spain and Spanish America, John Groth was an artist who illustrated many books and was best known for his depictions of combat. Throughout his life he was both fascinated and repelled by war. He went to Europe during World War II as a correspondent and artist for The Chicago Sun. His first story was the liberation of Paris, in which he got a scoop by riding in the first jeep to enter the city. Mr. Groth covered five other wars, including Vietnam. This is purely and simply a selection of writings and art on the Spanish fiesta, as it developed in Spain. Derived from a Kirkus review: An anthology of bullfighting in Spain makes no pretensions at being a history or an encyclopedia and concentrates on bringing together the best of auro-machian art and writing, selected for the purpose of clarifying the many typical and representative phases of Spain's national spectacle. The preface, by the editor, who is often translator, does follow the history and origins of the fighting bull, bull fighting and the fiesta itself from the noble amateurs to the special breed of professionals -- fighters as well as bulls, and is followed by definition and description of the basic passes, the veronica, the natural and the estocada. Then come excerpts from Belmonte, Sidney Franklin, from travelers and officials, from Hemingway, Frank Harris, Blasco-Ibanez, Barnaby Conrad, Tom Lea, Pritchett, Ruark; from poets and critics, from newspapers and books, from past and present a ficionados. An excellent culling of a vast library and its illustrations, assembled because they are appropriate and related, include neither paintings nor photographs. An exquisite addition to a collection, for those who are really, really interested. Endpaper Drawings by John Groth; Jacket painting b (illustratore).
