The author was born in Connecticut in 1802. He attended Brown University, where one of his instructors was Horace Mann, and one of his classmates was Samuel G. Howe. In 1830 he settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where he founded the Louisville Journal, one of the outstanding literary newspapers in the country. His clever and forceful editorials are thought to have been one of the factors that kept Kentucky in the Union during the Civil War. As a poet, he was a master of the blank verse form.
