Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This multi-volume series in six parts is the first English-language translation of Der Weltkrieg, the German official history of the First World War. Originally produced between 1925 and 1944 using classified archival records that were destroyed in the aftermath of the Second World War, Der Weltkrieg is the inside story of Germany's experience on the Western front. Recorded in the words of its official historians, this account is vital to the study of the war and official memory in Weimar and Nazi Germany. Although exciting new sources have been uncovered in former Soviet archives, this work remains the basis of future scholarship. It is essential reading for any scholar, graduate student, or enthusiast of the Great War.

Aggiungi al carrelloKeys features in his son's entry in the Oxford DNB. (John Paddy Carstairs was christened Nelson John Keys.) Three theatrical autographs - Nelson Keys, 'G. L.' and 'Gordon' - on one side of a 25 x 20.5 cm piece of card. Apparently a gift from fellow cast-members to the actress playing the 'Spirit of Spring' in the Arthur Wimperis sketch 'The Queen of Hearts', in the C. B. Cochran London Pavilion revue 'London, Paris and New York', which ran for 366 performances between 1920 and 1921. J. P. Wearing, 'The London Stage 1920-1929' (2014), states that the 'Queen of Hearts' sketch was introduced on 6 June 1921, and reports that the Times reviewer 'thought that the revue demonstrated that Nelson Keys, taking part in every scene, was "one of the very best comedians of the generation."' In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. At the head, in a bold hand: 'Always Bunch to you, to anyone else, / Sincerely yours / Nelson Keys'. Covering the greater part of the page is a thirty-line poem signed and dated at the end 'G. L. / 20. V. 21'. Arranged in five numbered six-line stanzas it is titled 'To the "Spirit of Spring" (Thoughts born on Whit Monday 1921.)' Begins: 'As down the sun-kissed glade you pass, / From dew-bespangled blades of grass, / Bright gems you fling.' Towards the top of the right-hand margin, in the same hand, is the following quotation from Oscar Wilde: 'For if these fallen petals / One to you seem fair, / Love will waft it, till it settles / On your hair. / O. W.' And in the bottom right-hand corner: 'Give me your hands. / Let grief & sorrow still possess his heart / That does not wish you joy. / The Tempest / Act V. Sc. i / Gordon'. See image.

Da: Antiquarian Bookshop, Washington, DC, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. Limited Edition. Autograph; 189 pages; Original maroon boards backed with gilt-stamped pigskin spine -- top edges trimmed, fore and bottom edges left rough -- "bound by Master Bookbinding Company, Inc., New York" [colophon]. The volume is in fine condition, the original dust jacket, which matches the design of the boards, shows minor wear along the spine (fading, wrinkling and some erosion at the top and bottom). Housed in the original slipcase covered with matching maroon paper, which displays minor rubbling and wear along the edges. A special American fine press edition, which used the Spanish text facing pages with Roy Cambell's translation which was originally published by the Harvill Press, London (and credited on this title page). Handsome full page illustrations by Elsa Schmid -- Painter, Mosaicist, Sculptor (1897-1970). Printed in black and red, throughout. The colophon at the end states: "Twenty-five copies were printed privately on handmade paper from Hamilton Farms Paper Mill at Gladstone, New Jersey. None are [sic] for sale. The drawings are by Elsa Schmid. The type is12 point Palatino, set at Huxley House, New York. The book was printed at Olsen Press, Newark, and bound by Master Bookbinding Company, Inc., of New York. Beneath this printed colophon leaf, there is an inscription in ink: "Alice Longworth / from / Helen Cutting / Paper-maker / June 1960." The South African born poet Roy Cambell had a special affinity for the Carmelites. After moving on from France, Cambell and his wife settled in Toledo, Spain, where they were received into the Roman Catholic Church. In 1935, the Cambells had sheltered some of the local Carmelite monks during anti-clerical rioting. By June of 1936, the communist forces from Madrid arrived in Toledo. The seventeen monks from the Carmelite monastery were rounded up, marched into the street and shot. Roy Cambell discovered their bodies, and made a lasting memorial of the grisly events in his poem 'The Carmelites of Toledo.' His sympathies for Franco and the political right caused some lasting turbulence within his circles in England. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic Saint, a Carmelite friar. He is both one of the 26 Doctors of the Catholic Church, and one of the foremost poets in the Spanish language. This text with the Roy Campbell translations into English won the 1951 William Foyle Poetry Prize. That text is acknowledge on the tile page of this fine press edition -- "with the kind permission of the Haverill Press Ltd., London, England." Father Martin Cyril D'Arcy SJ (18881976), Catholic priest and philosopher, had a wide circle of friends and acquantances in the fields of literature and the arts. He may have helped arrange the introduction of the artist Elsa Schmid to this edition; her papers at the Archives of American Art include correspondence from Father D'Arcy. As for Alice Roosevelt Longworth, her interest in Catholicism predated the conversions to the church of her daughter Paulina, and Joanna Sturm, the granddaughter she raised after Paulina's death. This spendid Olsen Press edition was also published in an edition of 110 copies printed on Fabriano mould made paper, (made in Italy). This special edition of 25 copies is rare, both in commerce and institutional holdings. See OCLC Number: 314002263 -- (one location: Yale -- [LSF - Haas Arts Special Collections (Non-Circulating). ."a transfer from the Walpole Library. It was originally a gift to Wilmarth .S. Lewis from the paper-maker, Helen Cutting, who signed the colophon. An ALS from Cutting to Lewis is laid in]. Incidentally, the Foyle Prize was presented to Campbell by Stephen Spender, who had previously been punched in the face by Roy Cambell after the latter jumped up onto a stage during a reading by Spender, - a member of the Communist party at that time. ; Signed by Notable Personage, Related.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The First Edition, First Issue of Cary's innovative Atlas, published on September 1st, 1787 in Very Good condition, the maps themselves being in Fine condition. Folio size hardback in full mottled calf on original boards with professionally replaced spine (compartmented, ruled, with gilt text on maroon leather label). Surface scratches and small indents to surface with what looks like an ink stain to rear board, corners worn but overall smooth and attractive The work on this binding evidently carried out by William George's Sons Ltd., of 89 Park Street, Bristol [tiny binder's/bookseller's label to foot of front inner board].The 47 maps have been collated as all present (Yorkshire merits four maps) and ALL dated September 1st, 1797 - the first issue. All maps have some hand-colouring, chiefly to borders, roads and estates or Parks / woodland. Many tissue guards are present but being made of inferior paper (as usual) they have not fared well and are either creased or ragged or loose (or all three) - they have however more or less done their job in protecting the plates though not without, in a very few cases, some very light off-setting to map borders - though not to the maps themselves. Faint off-settiing to top margin of title page and to a lesser extent the Dedication page, again due to the inferior paper of one leaf. Final half-page of text (Subscribers T to Y) has off-setting from rear board and final blank. The front free end-paper also has by hand, Yapp's name and date. The following blank page has the neatly written name of the antiquary and numismatist, Vernon B. Crowther-Beynon 1894. White, soft, laid paper with statuesque watermark (complete, no name) to a front blank leaf. Apart from the first map "Southern Britain" (England and Wales) appearing on the recto side of the book, all other maps appear on the verso (left) side with the map information opposite. Thus, viewing landscape-orientated maps is made easier with the fore-edge facing downwards. The maps are paginated by hand (no printed pagination except for the text at the rear) in what appears to be neat contemporary hand, also on the alphabetical Contents page. Front non-paginated collation: p[i-ii] Blank, [iii] Title page, [iv] Blank, [v] Dedication [stunning calligraphy], [vi-vii] Blank, [viii] Advertisement, [ix] Contents, [x] 'South Britain' map, [xi-xii] Blank, [xiii] Middlesex map (first County map). Rear text collation: Directions [1]-6, Market Towns [7]-10, Post-Towns [11]-17, Blank [18], List of Subscribers [19]-[24], + 1 Blank.Inside the front board (paste-down end-paper) is the very attractive ex libris of Brunson Yapp (1910-1990), OBE, the distinguished zoologist and author of (for example) Birds in Medieval Manuscripts. A COMPLETE COPY of the work, having importantly, the full List (6pp.) of Subscribers, numbering in total, approximately one thousand and including for each Subscriber, the town or city they were associated with. This List has invaluable information for historical bibliography and was crucial to the very existence of the book of course. How were so many potential Subscribers appraised of the book and how are they distributed across Britain? Also at the rear: Directions for the junctions of the roads of England and Wales through all the Counties. [Six pages covering 52 routes.]; The Market Borough Towns in England and Wales (with distances from London, number of parliamentary representatives; cities and universities];a List of Principal Post and Sub-Post-Towns with their Receiving Houses; and the Subscribers' List. Overall, a handsome copy with far better than average plates and sturdy leather binding. Some additional mailing cost for international insurance fees. Huge 40% PRICE reduction now applied.
