This publication contains one of the earliest descriptions of the discovery of the Lewis chess-men, a cache of 12th-century Norsk ivory chess pieces discovered in 1831 on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. CONDITION NOTES ON THIS COPY: paper spine wasted, covers detached and somewhat grubby, edges rubbed; text block in multiple pieces, some of final plates loose, but internally still almost Very Good condition, clean and unmarked save as noted, page edges untrimmed, all plates clean with no separations at folds; old library oval ink stamp on front cover, call letters in ink UL corner, oval ink stamp on title page; old newspaper excerpt glued inside front cover; period gift inscription to the Davenport Academy of Sciences is faint and almost legible, but the signature is not clear; 2-inch tear to outer b lank margin of pages 23/24 extends into text but with no loss.
