On February 21, 1864, Confederate and Union forces faced off over the banks of the Chuquatonchee Creek on Ellis Bridge in West Point, Mississippi. This three-hour battle pitted Nathan Bedford Forrest with his small but mighty cavalry against William Sooy Smith and his dogged Federal troops as they attempted to push through the prairie and destroy the railroad junction in Meridian. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Francis Bacon,Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, Robert McBryde (illustratore). 1st Edition. Penguin New Writing No. 38 with Early Painting by Francis Bacon. Also Contains Work by Wyndham Lewis, Saul Bellow, Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch, 1949 Vintage Paperback. This is "The Penguin New Writing", No. 38, published in 1949. It's a great issue with selections from contemporary literary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. It is significant as a marker in Bacon's career. (See picture provided). This inclusion is what elevates the book's value. Other artists whose works are depicted are Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, and Robert McBryde. In the pictorial section there are also photographic stills from stage productions of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon, including plays produced by Anthony Quayle and John Gielgud. there are also costume designs shown by James Bailey and Edward Carrick. This issue is also significant for its inclusions from the literary front : there are selections from Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch and Saul Bellow, as well as many others. This book delves into the growth of the religious epic before the great work of John Milton, Paradise Lost, with a specific focus on the impact of Abraham Cowley's Davideis. The author traces the evolution of the religious epic form, examining earlier works like Bishop Bale's Gods Promises, Hans Sachs' plays, and the influential Divine Weeks and Works of Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas. The book explores the influence of these predecessors on Cowley's Davideis, analyzing its themes, characters, and style within the broader context of 17th-century religious poetry. Ultimately, this study sheds light on the development of a significant literary genre and the role of Cowley's epic in shaping its trajectory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. James McBryde; Gilbert James; M. Fitzgerald; John Mackay; George Cruickshank; Charles De Mornay (illustratore). First American Edition. Hardcover, quarto, 128pp. First American edition - this was first published as "Book of the Supernatural" (London: W. Foulsham, 1979). CONDITION: Fine book in Near Fine dust jacket, which is not price-clipped, but has some surface scratches. ** An interesting collection of ghost stories and short pieces about their history. Includes a preface by Sir John Betjeman, the British Poet Laureate from 1972 to 1984, ghost stories from M.R. James and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, and an introduction by the well-known horror story compiler, Peter Haining. ** M.R. James told his ghost stories on Christmas Eve to members of the "Chit Chat Club" at King's College, Cambridge. The first such gathering in 1893 was so well received that he was invited to repeat the performance every year on Christmas Eve. The tales are well-wrought "Victorian" ghost stories with old-fashioned notions of evil spirits, dire forebodings etc - one imagines them being told by candlelight with the narrator's back to an open fireplace, and a winter storm rattling the window panes. After a few years keeping this tradition, his friends persuaded him to publish those stories, which became his first and most famous collection, "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" (1904).(AJ). Book.
