This book presents a detailed account of the history of Captain Ericsson's invention, the propeller, and its applications in the field of naval warfare. It begins by establishing the historical context of its conception and invention, giving credit to the author's influences. Then, it introduces the story of the propeller, which was met with resistance and doubt from the British Admiralty. The book follows the author's journey as he travels to America to enlist support for his invention, and how he finds success through Captain Stockton. The narrative culminates in the construction of the Princeton, the first ship to successfully utilize the propeller in naval warfare. The book concludes by emphasizing the transformative nature of the invention, and its potential to revolutionize maritime warfare and transportation by introducing a more efficient and powerful propulsion system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition. First printing (1,000 copies printed). Publisher's blue moiré cloth with printed spine label; x,[1]-98pp. Thin splits to cloth at joints, with small losses to spine ends; rubbing to spine label; mild foxing within, mostly confined to endpapers; Good and sound. Faint early (but undated) gift inscription in pencil, "To Frances Adelaide Gay / from a friend." A joint venture between Oliver Wendell Holmes, Park Benjamin and John O. Sargent, published for sale at the Fair for the Institution for the Blind in Faneuil Hall, May, 1833. Benjamin contributed nineteen poems to the volume; Holmes contributed seventeen, constituting, in effect, the first published collection for both authors. Holmes would not publish his first book under his own name until 1836. And though Benjamin had published a college work, "Poem on the Meditation of Nature" in pamphlet form in 1832, Blanck writes: "The Harbinger, 1833, which contains nineteen of his poems,.is the only book issued during the poet's life which may, pamphlets aside, be considered one of his books." BAL 977 and 8723. WILSON II:469-71.

12mo, pp. 8; self-wrappers; wrappers soiled, stitching broken. Printed at the De Vinne Press. Inscribed: "H. H. Furness Esq. / John O. Sargent." With a 4-page autograph letter dated Dec. 15, 1891 from Sargent to Furness laid in, criticizing Walt Whitman: "If Walt Whitman is to be any sort of poet, he must be a poet of the future, for there is certainly nothing in the way of poetry from Homer down to Walt that bears the slightest resemblance to his . I not only cannot discover any Art in his 'composition,' but the nature in it is of a very course and vulgar strain." Sargent died on the 28th of December, 1891, just 13 days after this letter was written. Also laid in are two other printed pieces from the De Vinne Press, both with Horatian translations by Sargent: 1) a bifolium titled "Horace. Written for the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the Harvard Club of New York, February 21, 1890," by John O. Sargent, a verse of 13 quartets; and 2) an 8-page gathering, titled: "Inscribed to the Harvard Club of the City of New-York as a suggestion of the possibilities in the first article of their constitution: "This club shall be perpetual"; on their quarter-century dinner, at Delmonico's, Friday, February 20, 1891. With the compliments of John O. Sargent, of the class of 1830," which prefaces three of Horace's odes, To Maecenas. Horace, III, 20; To Pompeius Varus. Horace II, 7; and, To Melpomene, Horace III, 30, all presumably translated by John O. Sargent. John O. Sargent was a lawyer and newspaper editor. He "matriculated to Harvard College, where he founded the Collegian, a newspaper he operated with his brother Epes, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and other students. Graduating from Harvard in 1830, he read law in Boston and earned admittance to the Suffolk County bar in January 1834. He opened a law practice in Boston. In addition to his law practice, Sargent contributed articles to the Boston Atlas, and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1837, he moved to New York City to become associate editor of the New York Courier and Enquirer . During the presidential campaign of 1848, he operated the Battery, a campaign newspaper devoted to the support of Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore for president and vice president, respectively, and subsequently edited, along with Alexander C. Bullitt, the Washington Republic, which became the principal newspaper of the Taylor and Fillmore administrations. Sargent discontinued editing the Republic at the end of Fillmore's presidency, and practiced law in Washington, DC and New York City until his death" (pepersofabrahamlincoln[.]org]. Of Horatian echoes, only Boston Public, Brown, Harvard, and Mass. Historical in OCLC; of "Inscribed to the Harvard Club." only Harvard in OCLC.
