Two short tears at edges with light wear to corners, strong crease to bottom left corner, light soiling to printed side with some faded ink writing near top right corner, blank v…erso side well soiled with light staining. All text card with no graphic art. Total of seventeen lines of text with partial transcription as: "VITALITY IS LOWEST In the small hours of the Night,- In the small hours of the Winter Season . . . May we remind you that GRAY'S GLYCERINE TONIC COMP. Formula Dr. John P. Gray. is still carrying convalescents, or those near breakdown, 'over the top', as successfully as ever. Fashions change, the human economy remains the same - so does the therapeutic value of Gray's Tonic. . . . The Purdue Frederick Co., 135 Christopher St., New York." Founded in 1892 by Dr. John Purdue Gray and George Frederick Bingham, the Purdue Frederick Company was located in Manhattan's Lower East Side and company's first product was Gray's Glycerine Tonic Compound, a sherry-based tonic or elixir prescribed for various seasonal ills. Purdue Frederick Co. still operates today as Stamford, Connecticut-based Purdue Pharma L.P. Card's text implies the product has been on the market for some time so perhaps it is circa 1900 to 1910 and the card was found (i.e. its provenance) inserted within a medical text book published in 1908.
