Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1. Minor shelf wear. Jacket spine sunned, frayed at head. Else a bright, clean copy. The later twelfth and thirteenth centuries were a pivotal period for the development of European government and governance. During this period a mentality took hold which tru…sted to procedures of accountability as a means of controlling officers' conduct. The mentality was not inherently new, but it became qualitatively more complex and quantitatively more widespread in this period, across European countries, and across different sorts of officer. The officers exposed to these methods were not just 'state' ones, but also seignorial, ecclasistical, and university-college officers, as well as urban-communal ones. This comparative study surveys these officers and the practices used to regulate them in England. It places them not only within a British context but also a wide European one and explores how administration, law, politics, and norms tried to control the insolence of office. The devices for institutionalising accountability analyzed here reflected an extraordinarily creative response in England - and beyond - to the problem of complex government: inquests, audits, accounts, scrutiny panels, sindication. Many of them have shaped the way in which we think about accountability today. Some remain with us. So too do their practical problems. How can one delegate control effectively? How does accountability relate to responsibility? What relationship does accountability have with justice? This study offers answers for these questions in the Middle Ages, and is the first of its kind dedicated to an examination of this important topic in this period.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume explores the relationship between individuals and institutions in scholastic thought and practice across the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, setting an agenda for future debates. Written by leading European experts from numerous fields, this theoretically sophisticated collecti…on analyses a wide range of intellectual practices and disciplines. Avoiding narrow approaches to scholasticism, the book addresses ethics, history, heresy, law, inquisition, metaphysics, pastoral care, poetry, religious orders, saints cults and theology. A substantial introduction establishes an accessible historiographical context for the volumes agenda, and a final afterword examines implications for future research. The history of individuals and institutions in scholasticism has often been unhelpfully treated either as a simple intellectual genealogy of schools and doctrines, or a constitutional history of particular organizational forms. This volume advances our understanding by reconsidering these fields as a whole and addressing two large questions. What was the relationship between particular intellectuals and their wider networks? How did individuals alter their institutions, and how did those institutions shape their individuality? This volume is of major importance to intellectual, religious and cultural historians as well as historians of knowledge and science. It will engage those working on individuals and institutions in the middle ages as well as in other periods. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Very good used condition with slight kink to the page margin and mild scuffing -- This book interrogates the relationship between different kinds of modern art and different kinds of cultural contexts in Asian and Pacific countries. The thirteen essays examines how the modern is formed by artis…ts in relation to other traditions and practices (Western or folk), the audience and modern art institutions, and the burgeoning conceptions of the national as deployed by the post-colonial state. The methodologies applied are broad, from anthropology and art history to cultural studies, and the perspectives include those of academics, curators, and new media theorists. In the Eye of the Beholder contributes a diverse understanding of where modern and contemporary Asian art is now situated.
